Whatever You Need — a tribute

I was two-thirds of the way through a music degree when I got a call from my songwriter friend Harriet. She was in Trevor Horn’s studio, Sarm West, and said “listen to this,” holding the phone up to the speakers. I was speechless — it was Tina Turner singing Whatever You Need, a song we had written some years earlier.

Fast forward to the 24/7 album and world tour: we were invited to Wembley Stadium for a full-throttle performance over two hours — forget wind farms, you could have powered the National Grid with the energy coming off that stage. I’ve never seen anything like it before or since.

We had backstage passes but never got to meet Tina — in some ways fortunate, because what do you say to a legend. We were lucky enough to receive platinum discs, and to have the song appear on five albums and a live DVD.

There will never be another Tina Turner. Rest in peace.
